A liminal lighting system that illuminates spaces with a blend of organic design and ambient warmth

RESEARCH

Mood Board

The research phase focused on a curated mood board that defined the aesthetic direction. The aim was to combine Decoration + Ambient Lighting with a Contemporary + Organic aesthetic, ensuring that the design served as both a functional light source and an eye-catching statement piece.

EXPLORE

R1 Sketches

I made three initial form concepts: a square structure with cardboard panels and a central diffuser, a capsule-like shape with a wavy diffuser, and a rib cage-inspired design. The rib cage design was chosen for its more liminal and organic shape, aligning with the desired Contemporary + Organic aesthetic.

R2 Rough Prototyping
The initial prototype was a rough hand cut model that revealed key issues, including the placement of the diffuser and the need for a solution to lock the ribs or make the structure stand upright. These issues became the focal points for refining the design.

REFINE

R3 Detail Exploration

In response to the challenges identified in prototyping, I created rough sketches to explore potential solutions, focusing on diffuser placement and structural stability for the ribs.

R4 Intermediate Prototyping
I used small test prints to connect the spine and check rib tolerances. During this, I realized the lamp could be adjustable, allowing the ribs to move. I also determined that adding a base to hold both ends of the spine would provide a stable foundation for the standing configuration.
